The Human Design System synthesizes aspects of ancient observational systems and more contemporary disciplines. Through the Rave Mandala, one of the ancient systems Human Design relates to is the I’Ching.
The Rave Mandala has 64 numbered sections in the outer ring, and those sections represent the 64 hexagrams of the I’Ching. The 64 hexagrams around the outer wheel, translated into the BodyGraph as Gates, each consisting of six Lines. These Gates are used in Human Design to thematically understand our genetic imprint, and provide very specific detail about the characteristics that make up each of us.
Human Design is a science of differentiation. As Ra put it, “Human Design is about the potential of the expression of uniqueness.” The Lines of the BodyGraph would seem to have the same meaning for everyone. But the Lines themselves live through one’s holistic life, coming alive as one lives life correctly; thus they are expressed differently in each individual through the framework of our unique Design.

This course provides comprehensive study material for anyone interested in learning to read Lines holistically and in context of a unique Design, rather than a homogenized way. Using a selection of 15 charts, Ra dives deeply into the topic of understanding a Line through integrating key components such as Profile, Type, Definition, Crosses and bridging Gates. Following are descriptions of each of the three lectures:
Lesson 1
Lesson One illustrates how differently Lines can be read, depending on the overall mechanics of a Design. It begins with reviewing the basic structure of a Line, the impact of fixing planets, and how Color influences Line expression. It also investigates repeated Gate activations and the role of Definition to help us understand how a Line can be experienced. Ra compares the world we live in, the Maia, to a movie in which the Lines are our individual scripts. In this lesson, he works with the first set of charts, selecting specific Lines and aspects that reveal the potential of the script within each chart.
Lesson 2
Ra continues his exploration of Lines with the second set of students’ charts, focusing on specific Lines in each. In this lesson he reviews Lines in the context of Definition, open Centers, and how Profile and Cross influence Line expression. Further explored is the influence of planets as they activate a Gate, and when they activate a detriment or exaltation. Ra emphasizes the need to understand the basic Design so we can see how the Lines come alive. This lesson will show you how to view the Lines holistically as part of the overall Design rather than looking at the Line as something that stands alone and apart.
Lesson 3
Ra reviews the final charts, going into more depth. He illustrates how to look at the Lines within the context of what he calls ‘not-self purpose,’ how to see Line Resonance, and demonstrates how conditioning factors such as bridging Gates and open Centers can deeply impact Line expression. With this final lesson in reading a chart and its Lines within the context of specific chart dynamics, we come to see the potential we have to bring our script to life by giving it a unique flavor and enjoying our roles, thereby enriching our own experience and our connection with others.
